Trump wrote this afternoon: “Pathetic excuse by London Mayor Sadiq Khan who had to think fast on his “no reason to be alarmed” statement. MSM is working hard to sell it!”
The US President yesterday lashed out at Mr. Khan, just hours after London suffered a terrorist attack that saw three Islamic terrorists kill seven people
Trump tweeted: At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is “no reason to be alarmed!”
A spokesman for Mr Khan, responding to Mr Trump’s latest tweet, said: “The mayor is focused on dealing with Saturday’s horrific and cowardly attack and working with the police, the emergency services and the Government to keep London safe.”
The spokesman said yesterday of Trump’s initial tweet: “He [Mr Khan] has more important things to do than respond to Donald Trump’s ill-informed tweet that deliberately takes out of context his remarks urging Londoners not to be alarmed when they saw more police – including armed officers – on the streets.”
The London Mayor earlier received backing from Theresa May, who said he was doing a “good job”, while also appearing to criticise the President for his tweets.
Asked if Trump was wrong about his assessment of the London Mayor, the Prime Minister told reporters: “I think Sadiq Khan is doing a good job and it’s wrong to say anything else – he’s doing a good job.”
On what Trump would have to say for her to criticise him, the PM said: “I’ve been very clear, I’ve been very happy to say when I think President Trump is wrong – to have taken America out of the climate change agreement, the Paris agreement.
“The United Kingdom stays in it and we believe it’s an important international agreement.
“So I’m not afraid to say when I think President Trump is getting things wrong.”
Following Trump’s earlier tweet about him, Mr Khan appeared to suggest he does not regard the President’s planned state visit as welcome.
While addressing police funding, he noted London has other responsibilities due to its status as a capital city.
Mr Khan said: “From major events, there’s a big cricket match today, to state visits – some welcome, some less so.
