Singer, artist, television presenter and fondly remembered as the face of many people’s childhoods. But today all these accolades and attributes were swept aside as Rolf Harris added convicted child abuser to the list.

The 84-year-old was found guilty of indecently assaulting women over several decades. One his victims was his daughter’s best friend and aged only 13 when the abuse began.

Throughout the trial the Australian entertainer presented an image of a family man. He arrived at court holding the hand of his wife, Alwen Hughes, and his only daughter, Bindi. But away from the cameras the jury heard that Rolf Harris had sexually assaulted his victims, often publicly and without any hint of remorse.

His daughter’s friend said that he had “ruined her life” and the jury heard that the repeated abuse from the age of 13 until she was 29 had been a campaign of grooming that had sent his victim into “a spiral of self loathing and alcohol abuse.”

The abuse started when the girl was invited to join the Harris family on a holiday to Hawaii and Australia. Rolf Harris approached her as she got out of the shower and appeared to give a big hug and to tickle her before slipping his hands inside the towel and assaulting her.

Mr Harris admitted that he had an affair with he girl but insisted that it had only started when she was 18. The jury heard that at that time the TV star would have been 53.

A letter he wrote to the girl’s father was read to the court; in it Mr Harris admitted that his relationship had been wrong. He said ” I know what I did was wrong, please forgive me,” adding “I am sickened by myself.”

But the woman, who is now 49, said that she found him “creepy and cringed” and denied suggestions by the defence barrister that she had encouraged the relationship.

In court Rolf Harris played up the image of the family friendly joker, treating the jury to version of his song ‘jake the peg’ as he gave evidence. But the prosecution told him he couldn’t sing his way out of these charges.

Part of the letter Rolf Harris wrote to the girl’s father was read out in court.

The prosecution told the court that behind this persona lay “a sinister pervert” whose offending had a patter to it. He was interested in under age girls, he used his celebrity status to get close enough to victims, he enjoyed touching them in a sexual way often in close prolixity to others.

One of his victims is a woman called Tonya Lee, who can be named because she has chosen to waive her anonymity. She sold her story to newspaper and television in her native Australia.

She told the court that she was 15 when she travelled to the UK with her dance group to give some performances. During this trip Rolf Harris was introduced to the girls and on one occasion went to a pub with them.

Here the victims described how he put his hands up her skirt and sexually assaulted her and when she tried to escape to the toilet he followed her and put his hand down her top fondling her breasts

Several more women came forward to claim that Rolf Harris had groped them but their evidence was not allowed to be used as part of the prosecution.

Details of alleged victims who said they had been targeted were presented to Mr Justice Sweeney but ruled inadmissible as part of the case.

An application was made after the trial had started for the account of a celebrity who claimed Harris had groped her during a live television broadcast in 1996 to be included as part of the prosecution, but this was rejected.

Others presented before the trial started included a woman who claimed she met Harris in 1977 aged 14 when he stayed at a motel near Sydney.

It is claimed he touched her bottom and waist, before pushing her up against a door and saying: “Rolfie deserves a cuddle”. He then allegedly followed her to the lift and touched her breasts, trying to stop her from leaving.

On another occasion in 2005, it is claimed that Harris grabbed a woman who was working at a Berkshire pub where a party was being held for broadcaster Michael Parkinson and started to kiss her neck. She claimed Harris did this in front of his wife Alwen.

A fourth woman, referred to as Miss G, said she met the defendant when he was doing an interview with the BBC during her art class at Shankill Leisure Centre in Belfast in 1991.

She claimed that he forced his tongue into her mouth, and described him as “opportunistic and predatory”.

Another woman claimed that in 1996 when she was 13 or 14 she met the defendant while he was in a tent at a fete in Bray, and he said he liked her jumper and wanted to see what was underneath it.

Three years later in 1999, it was claimed that Harris met a 24-year-old woman, who had mental health problems, while she was on holiday with friends.

It is alleged that he put his hand in her trousers and touched her breasts when he came to the villa where she was staying, and that there was another sexual encounter after Harris got into her bed when she was having a nap.

Prosecutors also asked to use the testimony of a woman who said she met the defendant at an art competition in Kensington Olympia in 2001 when she was 20, and said Harris touched her bottom when they were posing for a photo.

During the trial Australian media also reported claims by a radio host and a former newsreader that they had received unwanted attention from Harris.

Radio presenter Jane Marwick alleged that the performer had grabbed her breast after an interview in 2001, while former ABC TV newsreader Verity James told radio station 6PR that she and a female producer were also groped in 2000.

Ms James claimed that Harris pushed her up against a wall and touched her breast and bottom, and that he had done the same to a producer, but that they “laughed it off”.

Ms Marwick said Harris had been one of her “childhood idols” and that she “couldn’t believe this was happening”, while her co-host Gary Shannon claimed the performer “had his tongue out and was panting heavily”.

Both women decided to speak out after they heard the indecent assault allegations against the entertainer.

Veteran entertainer Rolf Harris saw his decades in the spotlight end in disgrace today as he was found guilty of indecent assault.

The 84-year-old, once a much-loved artist and musician, was convicted at Southwark Crown Court of 12 sex charges involving four women.

Harris lived in Sydenham during the 1960s and 1970s when some of the crimes took place. He was also an early member of the Sydenham Society when he lived in Border Road.

His army of supporters, including suited security guards and representatives from PR giant Bell Pottinger who attended every day of the trial, could do nothing to change the verdict of the jury of six men and six women.

Once seen by a UK audience as a national treasure, Harris had enjoyed years of success, netting him a multi-million pound fortune and the chance to paint the Queen.

But the downfall of an entertainer who was part of millions of British childhoods came today, as Harris became the biggest scalp claimed by detectives from high profile sex crime investigation Operation Yewtree.

Dozens more alleged victims have come forward during the trial, including several in Australia, and Scotland Yard has been in touch with their counterparts in the Australian police, but it is not yet clear whether they are pursuing any investigation in Harris’s home country.

The NSPCC said it has received 28 calls relating to Harris to date, involving 13 people who claim they fell prey to the performer.

Harris remained impassive as the forewoman delivered the unanimous verdicts.

His daughter Bindi held hands with a fellow supporter, and wife Alwen and niece Jenny also watched from the public gallery as his fate was sealed.

Judge warns of a custodial sentence being ‘inevitable.’

Rolf Harris has been released on bail until Friday when he will be sentenced.

Justice Sweeney warned the 84-year-old that given the conviction on all 12 counts it was “inevitable” that a custodial sentence would be possible.

“He must understand that”, he said, to which Harris’s barrister Sonia Woodley replied: “He does appreciate that”.

custodial sentence is a judicial sentence, imposing a punishment (and hence the resulting punishment itself) consisting of mandatory custody of the convict, either in prison (incarceration) or in some other closed therapeutic and/or (re)educational institution, such as areformatory, (maximum security) psychiatry or drug detoxification(especially cold turkey). For some crimes, such as cases of child sexual abuse, a custodial sentence is almost inevitable.

ROLF HARRIS TRIAL EIGHT DAYS JURY HAVE BEEN DELIBERATING

The jury have now been out for more than an hour and a half on this eighth day of deliberations.

There is still no word on verdicts.

During Harris’ trial, which opened on May 9, prosecutors claimed that the entertainer was a “Jekyll and Hyde” character who had a dark side to his personality and used his fame to abuse under-age girls with impunity.

But his defence team told the jury that Harris’ reputation had been “trashed” by a prosecution which did not reach the standard of criminal proof.IF ONE WISHED TO DEFINE THIS STATEMENT CRIMINAL PROOF IS 96% PLUS ,WHERE AS CIVIL CASES ARE 70% PLUS AS SHOWN IN THE OJ SIMSON CRIMINAL TRIAL OF MURDER NOT GUILTY .YET THE CIVIL SUITE BROUGHT AGAINST HIM FOUND HIM GUILTY.
We can only wait and see what and when the jury decides to reach a vedict on ROLF HARRIS.

paedophiles abound or has it always been the case?

IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE CASE I think, men not women seducers of little girls or boys. age difference is not relevant.13 year old girls or boys seduced by men 5 times their age .If it only stopped there it would be bad enough but it does not these pre deters prey on the young, innocent.grooming them to become sex toys when that fateful day arrives , the day that the teenager is the age of consent.Everything changes. It is ALL OK FINE THEN if both parties agree then it is party time.
wait what changes, the man becomes a bit of a rogue as a posed to a pervert, deviant, child molester.Think about it how many men do you know to have slept with under aged girls?Wait think before you say none. yes you see we could all name one or more.Oh don,t do it though they get very angry threaten to sue you for defamation of character, the female involved usually gets anonymity why because they are the innocent hard done by party?
We are all quick to judge, yet what is the normal ,ok age difference between male and female.12 years is ok?male 24 -female 12 ? male65 female 16?and before you turn your nose up the richer you are the more the young girls are attracted to the older man. Showbiz is full of age differences. That is ok seems, to be you have to be rich enough to support the young bride and spare a thought for the wife who has been there for the mean times and is now cast, humiliated on to the scrape heap of life her only fault being too old .

Grim: A necklace that paedophile DJ Jimmy Savile made out of a glass eye stolen from a corpse was sold at auction for £75

A necklace that paedophile DJ Jimmy Savile made out of a glass eye stolen from a corpse was sold at auction for £75, it emerged tonight.

Savile is understood to have worn the sickening trophy as he recorded the last ever episode of Top of the Pops in 2006.

It was eventually sold at an auction in July 2012 for £75.

And the disgraced DJ continued his depraved campaign of abuse by groping a child during the recording at BBC’s Television Centre while wearing the pendant.

Sickening reports released yesterday revealed Savile also used glass eyes stolen from corpses to make rings and other pieces of jewellery.

And he bragged about stealing false eyes from a mortuary at Leeds General Infirmary in shocking Department of Health reports.

His victim at the Top of the Pops recording was one of more than 100 victims aged between five and 75 that Savile attacked in a sick 50-year campaign of abuse.

Savile had sex with corpses and made rings of glass eyes from dead patients, according to reports relating to hospitals where he worked.

Other items sold at the auction alongside the glass eye necklace included his 2002 Rolls Royce with the number plate JS 247, which went for £130,000.

Among the other lots were his famous Jim’ll Fix It chair and a £12,000 gold and diamond Rolex watch.
